Motley

Motley

Motley is a mosaic.

Motley is the world.

The world is not a single continuous land under one sky. It is a grid of regions, each defined by a triad of ruling symbols; cartouches held by the Magi and Deities. These symbols, in their shifting arrangements on a local matrix, determine the weather of possibility inside that region: the balance of Stability against Change, the drift toward Stagnation or Progress, the kinds of stories that can take root and the kinds that wither.

The Magi are enslaved to the Binding, unlike the autonomous Deities they summon and channel through spells and effigies, the Deities who play with their lives as if pieces on a game board. Magi woke in the physical world and seek clarity, comprehension and power to shape reality. Deities began as archetypal patterns in the collective deep. Sufficient Belief condensed them into independent beings. Once formed, Deities no longer require the minds that birthed them. They play. They battle. The world-grid is the board they agreed to maintain. Belief itself is the currency and the fuel, the raw life-power of manifestation. The more of it a being or object can hold, the more real and consequential it becomes. Energy flows through the regions of the grid and can be harnessed and harvested. It is used to shape reality, to change the raw energy shaped as symbols of the regions.

The Twin Currents

Two great magical and social currents run through Motley.

The Path (also called the Harmonic Register or New Speech) favours formal order, approved lexicons, ritual precision, and cognitive standardisation. Its institutional face is the Keepers of the Concord and their Register Wardens. They treat certain older descriptors as contaminated. When those words are used, the conversation is redirected onto the speaker’s character. Precision becomes expensive. Patterns that once had clear names sink into Fog.

The Flow (Old Codex) is organic, diagnostic, sometimes predatory, sometimes nurturing. It still knows how to put the words together. Its remaining practitioners — Wordwrights, Codex Holders, and those the series calls the Shadow — retain the older circuitry. They can still name behavioural and spiritual patterns that the Path has rendered vague. Their magic feels like weather or animals: adaptive, dangerous, alive. In balance it is holistic. Out of balance it is raw.

Fog sits between them.
It is both a tactic and a state.
As tactic, it is the deliberate production of linguistic and social mist so that an exact point can never quite land.
As state, it is the median condition of water and air, the zone between emotional faculty and mental faculty, that appears whenever defining symbols are withdrawn from a region.

Key Structures and Organisations

Deity
Archetypes akin to a true essence, closer to the raw unformed magic from which they are crafted, yet held in form by self-belief structured from the original belief of others. The closest thing we have to Gods. Each holds one or more symbols across the three levels: Stone (material object or place), Water-Cycle (mental-emotional pattern), Light (spiritual essence). They may accept worship because Belief strengthens them, yet the wiser among them remember they are secondary creations. There is a truer Creator beyond the board.

The Magi
Able to harness and shape energy as magic. Not as powerful at shaping or holding Magic as are Deities but there is certainly an overlap. Often used as Agents by cities they have an accord or contract with or simply because they caught a Deities interest and are useful to it.

Keepers of the Concord / Register Wardens
The institutional face of the Path. They maintain the approved speech, rewrite older records, and treat residual Flow resonance as contamination. Their scriptoriums are places where texts are not merely copied but ritually overwritten.

Wordwrights and the Shadow
The residual Flow networks. Dockside glossaries, private salons, older free companies. They preserve diagnostic language and the capacity to make certain older connections. “They can’t do those sets of magics any more; they don’t know how to put the words together” is both observation and warning.

Open Door Circles
Long-running social and magical companies that accumulate a Binding of Shared Seasons. Intimacy becomes infrastructure. Hierarchy is often soft but real. Consent can be quietly redefined as proximity. Leaving carries residue.

The Unnamed
Entities and human roles that thrive when precise descriptors are costly. Fog is their preferred hunting ground.

Characteristic Locations

A city such as Tapestry, where Path institutions occupy the upper registers and Flow pockets persist in the docks and older quarters.
Regions currently under the Withdrawn Hand: places whose local triad is incomplete, where clear direction has collapsed and the 3×3 matrix shows empty or contested cells.
Scriptoriums in which older cartouches are being softened or erased.
Living “smoking rooms” or glossary houses that still function as weak Flow nodes.
Threshold sites where Stone, Water-Cycle and Light can still be deliberately braided — wax, clay, breath, word, and thread.

Ongoing Mechanics

Social debt accumulates as clocks or conditions. Shared history creates pull. Unresolved boundary violations leave residue. Belief can be gathered, focused, or starved. A mortal who acts with unusual clarity inside a thinned region may temporarily hold a fragment of a vacant symbol, becoming a brief, fragile, local axis before the power burns or is claimed by something larger.

Motley does not present a single moral temperature. Some regions run clean and formal. Others remain wilder and more precise. Many sit in Fog, neither fully ordered nor fully free. The mosaic is the point. Every region is a different arrangement of the same underlying game, and the game is still being played.

The rails were never the highest reality.
The question of who is permitted to draw them, and who is still able to refuse, remains open across the entire grid.
