VILE Knights
The Three Main Orders of Knights
Knights and their Towers reflect the tones they serve, with their architecture, energy, and purpose embodying their alignment. Encounters with these knights, whether as allies, foes, or mysterious figures, are pivotal moments in the game.
White Knights
- Alignment: Purity and Harmony
- Purpose: Protectors of justice, healers of the wounded, and seekers of balance in the swamp’s chaotic world. They believe in cleansing corruption and maintaining spiritual equilibrium.
- Personality Traits: Compassionate, self-righteous, unwavering in their ideals, sometimes blind to the nuances of moral grey areas.
The White Tower
- Appearance: The White Tower gleams faintly, its surface made of a polished quartz-like stone etched with sigils of Purify + Heart and Expand + Harmony. It rises above the swamp, casting a gentle glow visible for miles.
- Atmosphere: The air around the tower feels lighter, and swamp insects are strangely absent. Visitors hear faint, harmonious chanting, almost as if the tower itself hums with life.
- Interior: The inside is open and airy, with spiral staircases and walls covered in sigils. The top floor houses an open shrine where offerings of Gilt and pure water are left. Healing springs flow within the tower.
- Purpose: The White Knights use the tower as a sanctuary and a hub for spreading harmony. Pilgrims often visit seeking healing or guidance.
- Impact on the World: The White Tower acts as a beacon of hope, cleansing nearby areas of toxic energies. However, its purity may repel those who feel unworthy, and its rigid ideals can alienate more pragmatic or deviant individuals.
Black Knights
- Alignment: Filth and Nothing
- Purpose: Embracers of entropy and decay, Black Knights believe in the inevitability of destruction and see beauty in the grotesque. They often enforce the swamp’s harsh realities.
- Personality Traits: Ruthless, nihilistic, cynical, but often profoundly introspective. They might show a twisted form of mercy by hastening the inevitable.
The Black Tower
- Appearance: The Black Tower is a jagged, crooked structure made from dark basalt and reinforced with Bone. Wraiths spiral around it like crows, bound by sigils of Desecrate + Shadow and Bind + Filth.
- Atmosphere: A heavy fog hangs around the tower, filled with an acrid stench. The cries of unseen creatures echo eerily. Swamp flora around the tower are blackened and twisted.
- Interior: The walls seem to absorb light, and shadows pool unnaturally in the corners. Wraiths bound in sigils guard the halls. At the heart of the tower is a cavernous room filled with broken relics and the lingering essence of the Nothing.
- Purpose: The Black Tower serves as a bastion for those who embrace decay or wish to control it. It is also a repository of cursed knowledge and artifacts.
- Impact on the World: The Black Tower sows despair and inevitability, but it also enforces balance by reclaiming what is no longer needed. It attracts outcasts and those who’ve lost hope.
Red Knights
- Alignment: Deviance, with influences of Harmony or Toxicity
- Purpose: Red Knights revel in passion, desire, and chaos. They seek to challenge norms and ignite change, for good or ill, by embracing the duality of creation and destruction.
- Personality Traits: Charismatic, impulsive, unpredictable, torn between opposing forces of creativity and destruction.
The Red Tower
- Appearance: The Red Tower is a riot of colors and forms, appearing as though it grew organically from the swamp. Parts are made of living wood, while others are polished stone stained with blood-red hues. Flameflickers along its edges, kept alive by sigils of Expand + Desire.
- Atmosphere: The tower pulses with life, and visitors often feel overwhelmed by its energy. Strange, melodic laughter can sometimes be heard in the distance.
- Interior: Chaotic and labyrinthine, the tower shifts subtly over time. Walls are adorned with murals that depict ever-changing scenes of passion, rebellion, and destruction.
- Purpose: The Red Tower is a crucible of change, attracting artists, rebels, and those who seek to overthrow stagnant systems.
- Impact on the World: The Red Tower inspires both creativity and chaos in equal measure. Nearby areas often see outbreaks of sudden invention, riots, or inexplicable fires.
Swamp Knights
Swamp Knights are lone warriors with no allegiance to the three Towers. They live for their own ideals, often wandering the swamp and influencing the world in subtle but profound ways.
