VILE : Towers
In this swamp ecology, the Towers are constructed from a mix of natural and magical materials, blending the resources of the swamp with the will, imagination, and labor of their creators. Each Tower reflects the psyche and desires of its builder, making no two Towers alike. Here's a breakdown of what they're made from:
A. Swampwood
- Source: The dense, water-resistant trees of the swamp. Their roots grow deep into the mud, making them stable and resilient.
- Properties:
- Resistant to decay and warping, even in the swamp’s damp conditions.
- Some species of swampwood are naturally bioluminescent, adding eerie illumination to the Towers.
- The darker the wood, the more it absorbs the emotional tone of the builder, often reflecting their ambition or despair.
B. Algae Fibers and Swamp-Weeds
- Use: These are woven into ropes, nets, and insulation for the Towers.
- Properties:
- Tough, flexible, and lightweight, algae fiber is also used to create banners, sails, and curtains within the Tower.
- The swamp-weed roofs help insulate upper levels and keep moisture out.
C. Resin and Sap
- Source: Extracted from swamp trees and used as a sealant or adhesive.
- Properties:
- Waterproof and insect-resistant.
- Often combined with ash to create a glossy, amber-like coating for structural reinforcements.
D. Stone and Clay
- Source: Unearthed from deeper sections of the swamp or imported via trade.
- Properties:
- Heavy but durable, used for foundations or to anchor structures that might otherwise sink into the swamp.
- Often shaped into smooth bricks or rough-hewn blocks, depending on the resources and skill of the builder.
The Towers are not purely physical structures; they are also partially shaped by Dream and Heart, the metaphysical forces that define their creators.
A. Dreamstone
- Source: Conjured from the imagination of the builder and solidified through their effort (Graft).
- Properties:
- Dreamstone takes on surreal, fantastical shapes—spiraling spires, floating bridges, and impossible angles.
- It’s semi-transparent and glows faintly in the color of the creator’s Tone (Purity, Deviance, etc.).
B. Heartglass
- Source: A manifestation of the builder’s emotions, crystallized into tangible form through Desire and Heart.
- Properties:
- Fragile yet unyielding, it grows organically like veins or roots throughout the Tower.
- Reflects the inner turmoil or passion of its creator, often shimmering or pulsating with light.
C. Nothingshard
- Source: Formed from reclaimed fragments of areas consumed by the Nothing.
- Properties:
- Dark and cold to the touch, Nothingshard is paradoxically strong yet brittle.
- Often used to fortify Towers in desperate attempts to resist the advance of the Nothing.
- Carries a risk of corruption, as prolonged use can erode the builder’s mind.
The swamp’s creatures are also used as resources in Tower construction.
A. Bones and Chitin
- Source: Derived from creatures like the Bogmaw Snapper or Shadowshard Beetles.
- Properties:
- Durable and lightweight, used for decorative carvings or structural reinforcements.
- Large predator bones are often incorporated as status symbols or wards against Wraiths.
B. Glowmoth Silk
- Source: Harvested from Glowmoth Swarms.
- Properties:
- Used for curtains, banners, and even binding magical components together.
- Glows faintly, adding beauty and light to the Towers’ interiors.
C. Wraith-Touched Materials
- Source: Obtained from the remains of defeated Wraiths or other spectral creatures.
- Properties:
- Ethereal and translucent, these materials have a haunting beauty and are used to create ghostly ornaments or bindings.
- Risky to handle, as prolonged exposure can lead to the growth of Shadows within the Tower.
A. Gilt-Infused Layers
- Source: Excess Gilt accumulated by the builder through their Geas or transactions.
- Properties:
- When applied, Gilt forms gilded runes or shimmering coatings that enhance the Tower’s defenses or grant it magical properties.
- The more Gilt used, the stronger the magical enhancements, but excessive use may attract predatory Wraiths.
B. Elemental Imprints
- Source: Tied to the builder’s Tone or magical inclinations.
- Properties:
- Towers aligned with Purity might glow with a holy radiance, while those built from Deviance or Toxicity may emit foul fumes or corrosive liquids.
- These imprints make each Tower a unique reflection of its creator’s soul.
The Tone of the builder directly influences the aesthetic and functionality of the Tower:
- Purity: The Tower is clean, orderly, and radiates hope. It may feature gleaming spires and protective wards.
- Harmony: Balanced, interconnected structures with an organic, natural look. They blend seamlessly into the swamp.
- Deviance: Twisted, asymmetrical forms that defy logic, reflecting ambition or rebellion.
- Toxicity: Dark, imposing structures that seep malevolence. Poisonous fumes or traps are common.
- Filth: Ramshackle and grotesque, with elements scavenged from decay and ruin.
The Towers of the swamp are hybrid creations, blending natural resources, imaginative constructs, and magical influences. They are as much symbols of the builder’s willpower as they are practical refuges from the hostile environment. Over time, the Towers take on a life of their own, changing and decaying in response to their creator’s success or failure.
